Torniamo alla musica con un video molto particolare, a partire dalla canzone che illustra: “Lotus” dei R.E.M.

Non ho mai capito il tema del brano, sempre che ci sia, quindi non sono in grado di connettere le immagini alle parole.
Ma Stipe pare trovarsi in un ambiente, seppur questo sia molto glamour, a lui parecchio familiare: una casa di cura psichiatrica.
Essenzialmente, infatti, straparla, barcolla e ha allucinazioni. Forse è sangue quello che ha sulla sua spalla sinistra.

I “tondi” che sottolineano alcuni suoi dettaglî e degli altri due componenti mi fanno pensare ad un osservatore esterno, qualcuno o qualcosa che tenga sott’occhio la band.

Principalmente apprezzo il videoclip per l’estetica che propone, fatta di molti colori terziarî, vibranti, ma gelidi ed una luce incandescente che sembra tagliare, bruciare e disegnare le forme, il nero assoluto, profondo e pieno, delle ombre.
L’inquadratura del minuto 1:42 è semplicemente perfetta.

Da notare come quella luce sia la stessa che ritroviamo in altri videoclip diretti da Stéphane Sednaoui, come per esempio “Give It Away” (Red Hot Chili Peppers), “Fever” (Madonna) - questi due presentano anche lo stesso leitmotiv della pelle argentata -, “Discothèque” (U2), “Thank U” (Alanis Morissette) e la sublime “Dream On” dei Depeche Mode.
